Position Purpose:
Under the direction of the Research Manager, Sensory Science the Assistant Sensory Scientist will work within the MycoTechnology Sensory & Applications team. This position will work with the Research Manager,
Sensory Science, in the upkeep of the internal sensory panel and execution of all sensory projects relating to
MycoTechnology’s current and future ingredients. This individual will initially be responsible for understanding project needs, sample preparation, and executing tastings and trainings.
Essential Duties:
- Collaborate with R&D, Applications, and Quality teams to provide necessary organoleptic data for ongoing projects
- Set up and execute routine sensory tests such as discriminative, descriptive, and affective tests
following appropriate testing protocols.
- Address panelists questions as necessary
- Coordinate ongoing sensory panel training and recruitment:
- Train panelists on new methods or appropriate attributes
- Provide performance feedback to panelists
- Perform panelist retraining to meet performance standards
- Communicate with other departments to understand project timelines and necessary sensory testing
- Analyze data and report test findings to key project stakeholders, while maintaining a high standard of scientific integrity
- Archive study details, data, and reports in an organized manner
- Development and maintenance of documentation including SOPs, inventory, etc
- Procurement of supplies as needed while adhering to company policies and department budget
- Takes a firm and confident stance to uphold MycoTechnology cultural values & business standards. Appropriately addresses both project and non-project related issues when encountered
- Recognizes opportunities to make improvements to key policies and processes within the department and proposes changes
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science/Technology or Sensory Science from an accredited institution, or a
degree in scientific field with at least 3 years of relevant sensory experience.
- 1+ year running a sensory panel
- Highly self-motivated and directed
- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks on their own and as a member of a multi-disciplinary
team.
- Excellent written and verbal communications
- Strong formal presentation abilities
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Excellent working knowledge of Good Laboratory Procedures
- Strong knowledge of sensory evaluation
- Good knowledge of statistics and experimental design
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Desired:
- Master’s degree in Food Science/Technology or Sensory Science from an accredited institution
- Understanding of Human Subjects Research guidelines and Institutional Review Board requirements
- Experience using Compusense or other survey building software
- Experience using XLSTAT or other statistical software to analyze test results
