Reporting to the Director of Regional Sales for our Grocery East division, this individual will grow our independent presence, plus key grocery/natural retail accounts in a critical geography for Vital Farms. The area will include the 5 boroughs of NYC, New Jersey, Long Island, outer counties of NYC, plus southern Connecticut. This dynamic market features unique & high-volume retailers which presents huge upside opportunity for the brand. Another key aspect of the role will be managing a DSD distributor partner & their day-to-day operations covering this market. A successful candidate will have strong sales experience in a DSD system along with establishing strong relationships with our internal/external stakeholders. This includes collaboration within our grocery/natural sales divisions along with our business development crew (Center of Excellence).

What You’ll Do:

  • Maintain & expand independent/grocery customer base by developing rapport with our DSD distributor sales teams across those customer channels
  • Develop, manage, & support DSD/broker sales team network including implementing merchandising standards plus store level incentives to drive volume (i.e. secondary displays, shelf placement & positioning, etc.).
  • Build a strategic/collaborative annual trade promotion calendar across all customer segments.
  • Ability to work with DSD/broker sales & merchandising teams 2-3 days/week including visiting retail accounts; assisting with merchandising at store level; and/or meeting with buying groups/category managers on select key accounts.
  • Establish/maintain key customer relationships at store & buying group level along with developing relations with key senior leadership.
  • Create meaningful presentations for buying group(s) along with leading bi-annual business reviews for DSD distributor partner sales leads.
  • Track weekly sales, distribution, pricing, and trade to continuously achieve forecast accuracy including working directly with DSD partner buyers, plus our internal supply chain/demand team.
  • Work closely with sales & business development teams on seasonality, pipeline build for accurate forecasting.
  • Attend trade shows to represent brand & develop sales opportunities (if/when needed).
  • Partner with marketing on impactful shopper programs at strategic accounts
  • Manage category reviews across dairy and other categories to maximize and advance Vital Farms innovation and existing items in retail accounts
  • Perform retail level store checks in all markets as needed to ensure execution of initiatives and uncover opportunities

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) or equivalent work experience required
  • Must live in the NY Metro area + have the ability to travel as needed for customer appointments, trade shows, team meetings, etc.
    • Anticipate 50% travel mainly into NYC along with New Jersey, Long Island plus Westchester & Fairfield counites
    • Must have a state approved driver’s license in good standing including reliable access to a car five days/week
  • Must have demonstrated experience managing one to multiple DSD distributors along with independent & regional grocery accounts within the NY metro or other major NE markets (i.e. Boston, Philly, DC) with a preference given to candidates with experience working with the following:
    • Perishable or Beverage DSD distributor(s) within NY Metro
    • WFM Northeast Region
    • NYC based independent store operators that include Westerly Market, Westside Market, Zabars & Citarella
    • NY metro independent grocery operators that include DeCiccos, King Kullen, Uncle Guiseppe's and Morton Williams
  • At least 4 yrs of DSD distributor management experience paired with +2yrs of grocery/account management experience in the food industry
    • Dairy/refrigerated or DSD beverage experience preferred.
  • Previous Account Manager or Field Sales experience, with familiarity of planning trade and promotions and demonstrated success in broker management
  • Established relationships and demonstrated success working with key retailer accounts, along with leading distributor partner(s), including UNFI and KeHE
  • Working knowledge and keen understanding of SPINS, IRI, Nielsen and other syndicated data platforms
  • Proven ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively
  • Highly adaptable & resourceful with a proven sales track record in a new product/new market environment
  • Proficient in Trade Analytics (selling price, margins, etc.)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word)
  • Excellent skills in the following areas: listening, presentation, negotiation, analysis, customer service, selling, communication, organization
