Reporting to the Vice President of Farm Operations, the Vital Farms Veterinarian will support the health, welfare, and productivity of hens across our farmer network. This role combines clinical expertise with on-farm advisory, research, and proactive disease prevention. You will partner with our contract veterinary partners, family and company farmers, farm support staff, and industry stakeholders to ensure that Vital Farms continues to set the standard in pasture-raised animal care. The highlights of this role are: opportunities to partner with cross functional teams to develop a carefully crafted animal welfare and wellness plan, drive improvements in farm outcomes across our network while working with a variety of stakeholders to ensure we thoughtfully support farmers and laying hens .

What You'll Do:

Animal Health & Welfare

  • Develop and oversee preventive health programs for pasture-raised laying hens, including vaccination schedules, biosecurity protocols, and nutrition-related health management.
  • Provide clinical expertise and support for disease diagnosis, treatment, and control strategies, including Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and other emerging challenges.
  • Conduct farm visits and welfare assessments to ensure compliance with Vital Farms’ animal care standards.

Farmer Support & Training

  • Act as a trusted partner to family and company farmers, offering guidance on flock health, welfare best practices, and regulatory compliance.
  • Design and deliver training modules for farmers and Farm Support team members to enhance field-level knowledge.
  • Collaborate with pullet suppliers, hatcheries, veterinary partners and feed mills to ensure seamless animal care across the supply chain.

Research & Innovation

  • Lead and/or support applied research trials focused on flock longevity, welfare outcomes, and disease prevention.
  • Analyze flock health data to identify trends and recommend improvements.
  • Stay current on scientific and regulatory developments in poultry medicine and integrate findings into Vital Farms’ operations.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Partner with cross-functional teams (Farm Ops, Supply Chain, Quality, Compliance) to support food safety and sustainability goals.
  • Represent Vital Farms at industry associations, veterinary networks, and academic collaborations.
  • Contribute to transparent communication with external stakeholders, ensuring alignment with our commitment to animal welfare.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) required.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in relevant U.S. states.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in veterinary care of laying hens required.
  • Must be located or willing to relocate to Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana or Kentucky.
  • Strong knowledge of avian pathology, preventive medicine, and flock health management.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build trust with farmers and internal teams.
  • Passion for animal welfare and alignment with Vital Farms’ values of conscious capitalism and stakeholder success.
  • Willingness to travel frequently (up to 50%) across our farmer network.
  • You are an organized, self-directed and detail focused individual
  • You demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders from crew to farmers to executives
  • You can manage multiple, time sensitive, priorities and deadlines at once
  • You have the ability to lead and engage in creative problem-solving with both internal and external partners to identify barriers and come to mutually beneficial solutions
  • Proficient in MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

At Vital Farms, compensation decisions are dependent upon a variety of factors, which may include, but are not limited to, skill level, experience, education, training, market demands, and business needs. A reasonable estimate of the current starting annual base salary for this position is $175,000 - $205,000. Please keep in mind that hiring at the maximum end of the range would not be typical in order to allow for potential continued future salary growth.
